The University Of Waikato

In 1964, the University of Waikato emerged as a result of persistent advocacy by a determined group of Hamilton locals who envisioned having a university in their city. Initial facilities were modest, but by early 1965, new structures were officially inaugurated by then Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson. The esteemed Sir Don Llewellyn served as the founding Vice-Chancellor.

Devoted to providing a world-class education and advancing research, the University of Waikato boasts a diverse community of approximately 13,000 students and 1,500 staff. Our commitment extends to offering a distinctive and enriching university experience while fostering robust international connections to propel knowledge forward.

The University of Waikato operates across three distinctive campuses:

  1. Hamilton Campus: Situated in the lively and multicultural city of Hamilton, our main campus provides a dynamic setting with nearby outdoor activities, shopping destinations, and a variety of eateries, all just a short drive away.
  2. Tauranga Campus: Expanding our footprint, the Tauranga campus offers a unique educational environment, contributing to the University’s commitment to excellence in learning and research.
  3. Zhejiang University City College (ZUCC): The University of Waikato extends its global presence with the Zhejiang University City College, fostering international collaborations and providing a diverse educational experience.

This multi-campus approach allows the University of Waikato to cater to a wide range of academic pursuits while embracing the vibrant cultural and geographical diversity of its locations.
