Northern Arizona University, initially named Arizona Normal College, commenced operations in 1899 with a humble beginning. The student body comprised 23 individuals, accompanied by two faculty members. Notably, Almon Nicholas Taylor served as both a faculty member and the school president. The campus, centered around the current Old Main building, housed two copies of Webster’s International Dictionary, each bound in sheepskin.

The recruitment strategy in those early days differed significantly. The inaugural president adopted a hands-on approach, traversing the countryside in a horse and buggy to actively seek prospective students for the lone school building. By 1901, the university marked its first graduation ceremony with a graduating class of four women. These pioneering graduates earned credentials to become educators in the Arizona Territory.

The roots of the University of Arizona trace back to its founding in 1885, just 27 years prior to Arizona attaining statehood. The inaugural structure, known as Old Main, reached completion in 1890, serving as the hub for the School of Agriculture, equipped with classrooms, laboratories, and a mess hall.

Despite encountering numerous challenges on the journey to establishment, the university remained resolute in its mission. The inaugural graduating class, comprised of three students in 1895, marked the commencement of an extraordinary expedition of learning and exploration, weaving tales of fascination that continue to define our indomitable Wildcat spirit.

Acknowledged under the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of both 1862 and 1890, we proudly bear the designation of Arizona’s Land-grant university. The iconic rallying cry “Bear Down!” resonates throughout our institution, originating in 1926 and evolving into a fundamental element of our identity, uniting Arizona Wildcats across the globe.

In 1937, we pioneered tree-ring research, establishing the first lab for dendrochronology. Our contributions extend beyond the Earth, as we played a crucial role in lunar exploration by aiding in moon mapping, allowing for the historic landing of the Eagle in 1969. In 2021, we achieved another milestone by successfully sampling an asteroid, marking the first instance of such an endeavor in U.S. history.

Troy University has a rich history of educational excellence, tracing back to its establishment on February 26, 1887. The Alabama Legislature, through an act, founded Troy State Normal School with the primary purpose of training teachers for the state’s schools. The inaugural president, Joseph Macon Dill, led the institution in its early years. In 1893, the school underwent a name change to Troy State Normal College.

Initially focused on offering extension courses for teachers and providing teaching certificates, the institution underwent a significant transformation in 1929. The State Board of Education revised its charter, leading to a new name, Troy State Teacher’s College. During the same year, the college relocated to its present site, marking the dedication of the first two buildings: Shackelford Hall, named after President Edward Madison Shackelford, and Bibb Graves Hall, honoring Alabama’s “education governor” David Bibb Graves. Governor Graves commissioned the Olmsted Brothers architectural firm to design the campus landscape.

Following World War II, Troy State Teacher’s College experienced substantial growth, driven by returning veterans utilizing the GI Bill. This period saw a significant increase in enrollment, prompting the introduction of degree programs beyond education, notably in business. Recognizing this expanded role, the State Board of Education in 1957 dropped “Teacher’s” from the institution’s name, officially becoming Troy State College.
