Established in 1873 as Canterbury College, the University of Canterbury stands as the second university founded in Aotearoa New Zealand. Unlike many universities of its time, Canterbury College was distinctive for admitting women right from its inception.

In 1933, Canterbury College underwent a name change to Canterbury University College, eventually adopting the title University of Canterbury (UC) in 1957.

In its initial century, the University found its home in the heart of Christchurch, specifically the Arts Centre, before relocating to its present site in 1975. The current campus, situated in the suburb of Ilam, spans 76 hectares and resembles a miniature city nestled between the sea and mountains.

The contemporary campus features a central complex comprising libraries, lecture halls, laboratories, and student residences, all surrounded by expansive playing fields, a river, and the celebrated Ilam Gardens. This move to the ‘new’ campus marked a transformative shift for the University, ensuring a blend of academic excellence and natural beauty in its educational landscape.

Admission Requirements

Each international student’s application is individually assessed, considering specific criteria based on the chosen program of study. Submission of original transcripts from the most recent academic institutions is mandatory. Non-English transcripts should be accompanied by both the translated copies and the original documents. Applicants should meet a minimum age requirement of 18 at the commencement of the course. For those hailing from non-English speaking nations, inclusion of English language proficiency test results is obligatory. Important Note: If you are not a New Zealand citizen or a permanent resident, securing a valid study permit before your arrival in New Zealand is a prerequisite.
